My 3rd Great Grandfather Allen Jay Crooker

Allen J Crooker FamilyAllen Jay Crooker was born at Portland, Cumberland County, Maine, 16 January 1823, son of Isaac Crooker and Irena (Coy) Crooker.  As an adult, he was 5 feet 81/4 inches tall with blue eyes and dark hair. He died at South Paris, Oxford County, Maine, 11 March 1897.

He married first at Brockton, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, 19 April 1849, Hannah Lenora Millett. She was born 29 September 1825, She died 04 December 1884. 

He married second N. Louise Smith after the death of his first wife Hannah. She was born 6 June 1844, She died 02 April1929.

As a young man, Allen Jay was using the name Joshua Crooker while living in Massachusetts. On May 2, 1849 in the State of Massachusetts he changed his name from Joshua to Allen Jay.

He moved from Maine to Massachusetts prior to 1849. He maintained residence in Massachusetts up to the Civil War. During the Civil War his wife and son lived in Paris, Oxford County, Maine. In 1865 after the Civil War he joined them in Paris. In 1874 the family moved to Norway, Oxford County, Maine.  After the 1890 Veteran Census was taken, Allen Jay moved from Norway to Pleasant Street, South Paris, Oxford County, Maine.

On April 16, 1861, Allen Jay enlisted in Company D of the Fourth Massachusetts Regiment which was also known as the Randolph Light Infantry. Subsequently, Allen Jay was mustered out on July 22, 1861. He then enlisted as a Private in Company G of the 2nd D.C. Infantry for three years. He was promoted to the rank of Corporal on November 20, 1863.  He reenlisted in Falls Church, Virginia on February 29, 1864.  Allen Jay was finally mustered out of service on September 12, 1865.  

Allen Jay and Hannah (Millett) Crooker had one child:

Allen Henry Trowbridge Crooker, b. 14 October 1851; d. 23 September 1919; m. at Norway, 13 April 1887 Algenora Bradbury. She was born at Paris, Oxford, Maine, 18 Jul 1863 daughter of Joseph A. and Sarah J. (Mixer) Bradbury. She died 24 April 1961.
